Stephanie is a 1985 graduate of the University of California at San Diego (B.A.), and a 1998 graduate of the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia (J.D.). For 24 years, she has practiced in the areas of domestic relations law to include custody, visitation, adoption, conservator and guardianship, support matters, estate planning and general corporate matters.

In addition to her law practice, she became an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary. She also holds membership affiliations with the Williamsburg/James City County Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar Association, the Family Law Section of the Virginia State Bar Association and member of James City County Rotary. Ms. Montgomery has been appointed by the courts as a Special Justice for the Ninth Judicial District and she has served as an Advisory Board Member at the Riverside Doctors Hospital.
